People have this misconception that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexico's Independence Day, but the fact remains that Mexicans celebrate their day of independence on September 16.
It doesn't take much for us Americans to get a party started for an occasion and today is just one of those days.
*Takes a Sip*
While you and the crew are sipping margaritas take some time out and review some facts about the Real meaning behind Cinco De Mayo.
1. The festival is actually more widely celebrated in the United States than in Mexico. In 1862, when the Mexicans defeated the French force in the Battle of Puebla, the Civil War in the USA gathered intensity. Caught between both the conflicts, Mexicans in the USA started calling the victory in Puebla as their own victory. And since then, several Cinco de Mayo traditions, such as parades, Mariachi music performances and street festivals, were held in cities and towns across Mexico and the USA.
2. The largest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the USA takes place in Los Angeles, California, which has the highest concentration of Mexican-origin population in the country.
3. Longmont in Colorado, USA, plays host to another interesting celebration. Thousands of people attend this annual event not just to enjoy the food, but also for shopping, car shows, family activities and, especially for the Chihuahua beauty contest. The contest carries cash prizes and ends up crowning a King and a Queen Chihuahua.
4. People in the USA spend more than US $2.9 billion on margaritas annually, which means approximately 14 percent of the country’s cocktail sales, according to Bloomberg. Cinco de Mayo is considered the biggest day for margarita sales in the USA. However, the skyrocketing price of lime is making lime juice a much more expensive element in margaritas than tequila.
5. Cinco de Mayo celebrations are not restricted to Mexico and the USA only; the day is celebrated around the world. In Sydney, Australia, a competition called Margarita Showdown is held on May 5. At this annual event, started last year at the Hard Rock Café, five local bar teams compete against each other to make the best margarita. The judging panel consists of the regular patrons; to become a judge, each person pays an entry fee and tastes five drinks before voting for the best one.
